Facebook Foxes

A family of gray foxes moved to the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park!
They are so cute!

Facts about gray foxes:

  • they are gray with pale brown tummies
  • very small - a little bigger than a house cat
  • only foxes that can climb trees!
If you have a Facebook page, check out the one for these foxes!
(The Facebook people made one for them.)

This is them:

Silver foxes, they rock!

Compare these two pictures before reading:
Silver Fox standing watch from a small hill amongst fall colour - CA
Red Fox pauses while hunting from on top of some old hay bales

There's something about them... So similar, yet soooo different! Their bodies are built very similarly, and they both have medium sized ears. Their hind legs both have a bend, and their chests poke out, like they're proud. The silver fox is a silvery black color, and very bushy, while the red fox is orangey, white, and brown; you can't call him bushy. The thing is, they're different but they're not. Silver foxes are red foxes in an other color form. Silver foxes live in the same places as red foxes, and they're especially common in Russia. In Russia, silvers are domestic! I'll post more about silvers soon. Red foxes do get bushy like the picture of the silver fox, just saying.

Foxes!

Photo: Fox mother and pup touching
Foxes are very affectionate to each other, especially mothers to their young.  When the young foxes are babies, either the mother or father will go out to hunt, and when they come home, it's dinner time!

As kits, or pups, foxes are very playful and often stay like that! They pounce on each other and play fight, which comes in handy for hunting later in life. In the picture above, the two kits are play fighting. Even though you can't see it, the fox on the right is probably giving his sibling a nip on the neck!

As a full grown fox, they will be able to have their own family and den, and will be able to hunt. In the mating season, spring, foxes mate and have kits.
