Fast Facts

  • foxes can swim, but only if they have to.
  • about 5 to 8 foxes come in a litter
  • red foxes once lived in Australia
  • red foxes are the most common
  • there are no foxes in Antarctica
  • silver and fennec foxes can be pets

Foxes eat almost everything, and if they have to, they'll eat berries.

Fennec foxes have big ears to insulate heat in the desert, where they live. Arctic foxes have small ears to keep warm. Remember it like this: fennec foxes have big ears to stay cool and arctic foxes have small ears so they don't get frostbite!

Silver foxes live in North-East Europe, mostly in Russia. They are like all other foxes, apart from their striking color.  Silver foxes can be pets, or be wild.

All About Arctic Foxes!

What...
do they eat?
small arctic mammals, and in the summer, sometimes plants
color are they?
most famous with a white fur, they can also be brows, bluey shades, and grey

Why...
do they change color?
arctic foxes change color so they can camouflage in the summer
do they have small ears?
they have small ears so that they stay warm, like how fennec foxes have big ears to stay cool
do they not move to warmer climates?
arctic foxes are adapted to their area, so it's like saying you've been living in the Caribbean for 12 years and then you have to move to the Arctic!

Can...
they pounce as well as other foxes?
of course! every fox can pounce pretty well
they swim?
yes, actually, but only if they need to

Arctic foxes are, being quite small, a polar bears' prey. Occasionally snowy owls snack on them; arctic foxes like to eat easy-to-catch snowy owl chicks, and then the mother owl comes along for a meal...

Are swift foxes endangered?

Are swift foxes endangered?
No, swift foxes are not endangered.

**in courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_fox
Swift foxes are still very common in the Great Plains, now where humans live too.
But still, that doesn't mean that you can litter and waste water, because many other animals are endangered.

November Fox: Swift Fox

Swift foxes are amazing foxes living in the Great Plains of North America. These foxes have big, oval shaped, intelligent eyes and a bushy tail. They are about the size of a domestic house cat. Weather in the Great Plains can be harsh, because in the summer it is sweltering, and the winter it is freezing. Unlike many other animals, the swift foxes do not hibernate in the winter. In spring, they give birth to little pups/kits. Pups/kits are very playful and have play fights. As they get older mothers teach their young ones to hunt. By the next spring, the foxes should be ready to have their own home and family. Many animals lead a life in the Great Plains, and it is always bustling with creatures. Other than foxes, some famous animals there are:
  • Bison/buffalo
  • deer and antelope
  • rabbits
and many more. Swift foxes eat small rodents like rabbits and squirrels, but sometimes eat berries, or plants.

How Foxes and Fox Club Got Started

If you were ever wondering how I got interested in foxes, it was the movie Der Fuchs und Das Madchen; The Fox and The Girl. I was 5 at the time, and as soon as I saw the film, I became obsessed. Me and my Grandma (Omi) once went to a zoo. I saw a toy fox at the little shop and said,"Want! Want!" Five years later, I start Fox Club. I have no idea why, but that movie, it just started an obsession about foxes.

Fennec Fox Facts

Fennec Foxes have big ears that radiate body heat so that they can keep cool in the Sahara Desert, in Northern Africa. Also, their long thick fur keeps them warm at night, and is lightly colored for camouflage and to stay cool. (Dark colors absorb the suns heat.) Living in a desert, daytime is boiling hot and night is cool. Fennec foxes are the one of the worlds smallest foxes, but have the biggest ears! Cubs have huge ears which are usually the size of their heads! In the countries they live in the wild, Northern Africa, some people keep fennec foxes as pets, like having a dog. Actually it is, foxes are closely related to dogs.

The white tip tail is made with coconut shavings. Yum! I admit, he was so pretty I didn't want to eat him... but in the end, he was yummy!

Fun and Games!

This is a mind game. Play with a friend or by yourself. Say one thing related to a fox out loud, such as: kit. Then the next person goes; a kit, a berry, and so on. This game is good for long car trips!

Fuzzy Fox

Island Foxes

Island Foxes, living only on the Channel Islands of California, have alway been endangered. In the 90's, golden eagles started hunting on the northern islands. Meanwhile, disease spred in the southern islands. Only the size of a medium sized house cat, the foxes could not survive. By 1999, the foxes were almost extinct. Conservationists leapt in to help. They started to breed the foxes and sent the kits to the wild, and relocated the eagles. Even though Island Foxes are still endangered, scientists and conservationists are helping to keep them survive.
